In my quest to restore my skin to its former glory I scoured the internet for some of the best products known to get rid of acne and fad acne scars. On that journey I found out about alpha arbutin from The Ordinary.
If you are not familiar with the brand the Ordinary here’s a quick summary,
The Ordinary is a brand made by Deciem. However, this particular brand takes the fluff out of their marketing. Instead, it focuses on supplying the ingredients you actually need.
If you visit the deciem/the ordinary page you’ll find a plethora of products for your skincare needs.
What is alpha arbutin?
Alpha arbutin is a natural depigmenting and skin-lightening agent found in bearberries and wheat. Also, research has found that arbutin also exists in cranberry and blueberry leaves in a much lower concentration.
As a result of its melanin limiting capabilities, alpha arbutin is commonly recognized as a safer alternative to hydroquinone.

The Ordinary’s formulation of alpha arbutin is a 2% concentration of the active ingredient paired with hyaluronic acid for a smoother delivery. Furthermore, this formula claims to visibly target hyperpigmentation and dark spots.
Why I love the alpha arbutin from The Ordinary?
Now to the meat of the matter. My answer to this is simple. It works. My skin hates heavy products or wads of products and this serum is very easy to use and does what it claims. It’s also great for all these other reasons too:
- feels nourishing and moisturizing
- reveals glowy skin
- doesn’t clog pores
- long-lasting (a little goes a long way)
- it’s gentle (not irritating)
- works well with other products
Moreover, if this serum was in a class with others I think it would get an A+. It’s truly a simple product that packs a punch and gradual use is rewarding.
Not to mention, after 3 months of use I’m still not done with my first 1oz bottle.
The glowy skin compliments have been endless. Despite still having dark spots the improvement is gradual and noticeable. Alpha arbutin is now a skin essential for me and I’ll be using it for as long as I can.
